“Holy Ecstasy!”—Enjoying Intimacy with God

I must say the idea for a book entitled Holy Ecstasy came to me from several different directions. The first was when I was reading one of the best books I’ve ever read:  The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom. To quote the front cover of the book: “The Triumphant True Story…and extraordinary adventure of one courageous Christian woman who became a militant heroine of the anti-Nazi underground.” You might think: “What on earth does that have to do with ECSTASY?” I think: “Everything.”

Corrie’s story is amazing…I’ve never been on a treadmill at the gym crying like a baby until this book! Although it is only a tiny part of the story she tells, it saddened me greatly that the only man she was ever romantically interested in married someone else. As far as I know, Corrie never experienced a passionate, physically intimate love relationship with a man the rest of her life. Perhaps this never mattered to Corrie, and perhaps it doesn‘t matter to you, but for some reason it greatly impacted me.

The Prayer of a Girl Called “Alone”

Posted on Jun 20, 2011 in Faith | 0 comments

Once upon a time there was a girl whose sense of self-worth had been shattered. She had experienced loss, betrayal, and rejection, and from her own unwise choices, she felt shame. In a crowd she felt alone, and in private her tears were her closest friends. Still, she had a mustard seed of faith and remembered words she’d heard long ago: “’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’” (Jeremiah 29:11). As a deer pants for streams of water, her soul thirsted for the Living God. She rested her head in her Bible and prayed:

The Devil Still Prowls…Be Ready!

Posted on Jun 13, 2011 in Faith | 0 comments

Have you heard it said that the devil’s greatest deception is making you think he doesn’t exist? But we know he does because Scripture says, “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). He spoke to Eve, he spoke to Job, he’s spoken to me, and I imagine he’s spoken to you. Taking words directly from the Bible, he is crafty; he tempts us, prompts us, and leads us; he takes away the word from our heart; he arranges schemes to trap us, and his work is to deceive us (see Genesis 3:1; Matthew 4:1; John 13:2; Luke 4:5; Luke 8:12; Ephesians 6:11; 2 Timothy 2:26; and Revelation 20:19). It boggles my mind how prideful he was when he tried to tempt JESUS!

Instead of looking at that famous exchange of words in Matthew 4, my hope is to strengthen each one of us against the wiles of the devil by acknowledging three contextual aspects of the temptation of Jesus instead. First, the devil came to Jesus at a time when He was extremely vulnerable: Jesus had been fasting forty days and forty nights for Pete’s sake! Yes, He was God but He was also man—we can’t fathom what would have been His level of weakness and hunger. Point #1: The devil wants to take advantage of us when we are most susceptible to his wooings. Because the devil ultimately wants us to forfeit our soul, he tries to appeal to whatever part of us—heart, mind, or body—is most empty and wanting/needing to be filled.

Laurie’s “Daily Scramble” in Oxygen Magazine!

Posted on Jun 6, 2011 in Food and Fitness | 0 comments

Have I mentioned I’m a dreamer? A BIG dreamer?! I guess I see no reason not to be. And so I go for it.

In December of 2006, the year that Ben died in May, the kids and I were at our local Walgreen’s drug store when I happened to notice my first women’s fitness magazine. It was Oxygen, and it had Tosca Reno on the cover. I started reading about her inspirational story and, since all my kids were occupied nearby looking at toys or books, I actually sat down on the floor and read through most of the magazine.

By this point I had fully shed all my pregnancy weight, had completely fallen in love with working out, and was truly in the best shape of my life. I was training for my first half-marathon but more than anything still loving strength training and my new healthy diet. It struck me that if Tosca Reno could be on the cover of this magazine because of her “Success Story,” why couldn’t I?
