“Holy Ecstasy!”—Enjoying Intimacy with God

I must say the idea for a book entitled Holy Ecstasy came to me from several different directions. The first was when I was reading one of the best books I’ve ever read:  The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom. To quote the front cover of the book: “The Triumphant True Story…and extraordinary adventure of one courageous Christian woman who became a militant heroine of the anti-Nazi underground.” You might think: “What on earth does that have to do with ECSTASY?” I think: “Everything.”

Corrie’s story is amazing…I’ve never been on a treadmill at the gym crying like a baby until this book! Although it is only a tiny part of the story she tells, it saddened me greatly that the only man she was ever romantically interested in married someone else. As far as I know, Corrie never experienced a passionate, physically intimate love relationship with a man the rest of her life. Perhaps this never mattered to Corrie, and perhaps it doesn‘t matter to you, but for some reason it greatly impacted me.

Corrie and her sister, Betsie, were incredibly tight with God. They experienced a relationship with Him—an intimacy with Him—that I and frankly every one of us should crave. We who read about these faith-filled sisters place them on the highest spiritual pedestal, but really shouldn’t this intimacy with God be standard living for every one of us who call ourselves Christians? They were simply the plain daughters of a watchmaker, living a pretty unexciting life, but because of their relationship with God—the Perfect Lover—and how He used them for His glory, their names will be remembered as spiritual giants for all of history. Although I can’t know for certain, I don’t think Corrie and Betsie would think they missed out on physical intimacy with a man because they had something far greater: spiritual intimacy with a God who was ever present and took care of their every need. Especially inside the concentration camps or solitary confinement, God was their everything. I think this is an extremely important lesson for us women—and trust me, I’m the first who needs to learn it!

There is not a doubt in my mind that God loves each and every one of us more than we can possibly imagine. Based on Scripture, I also have no doubt that God wants us to love Him in return, “with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30). This is the relationship He craves having with us and that He wants us to crave having with Him in return. This is the reason idols are mentioned all throughout Scripture as something we are NOT to have because they—no matter what or who they are—knock God off HIS throne in our individual lives and place something or someone unworthy on it. HE wants to be our First Love, and truly He is the only One deserving.

I’ve started studying what intimacy with God looks like, feels like, sounds like, and even tastes like in Scripture. The more I read and learn, the more I personally experience, I believe the intimacy we can share with our Holy Lover is nothing short of ecstasy!

Just today, driving on the highway, God expressed His love to me on someone else’s license plate. Who knows why that person bought a plate which says “ADORED,” but I believe God knew I was writing this blog today and wanted me to know—and to pass along to you—that we are ADORED by Him. He is truly an awesome God.

How and when do you feel most intimate with God? Details requested!
