If there is one thing to know about me, it’s that I have a lamp I absolutely love! I go to its soothing, inviting light first thing every morning and return to it whenever I need or want its illumination throughout the day. My lamp provides many different kinds of light, but miraculously it’s always the kind I need…a gentle ray of comfort or healing truth…the mighty flame of courage or strength…a quiet twinkling of wisdom and guidance…the soft and steady glow of peace which transcends my understanding…sometimes it is only the tiniest glimmer of hope. But the light from my lamp is always beautiful because it forever shines perfect love.
“You are my lamp, O Lord; the Lord turns my darkness into light. With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall” (2 Samuel 22:29-30). This website alone is a perfect example of a huge, terrifying risk which only exists because God and His Word provided the light to “help” me “advance” and “scale a wall” MUCH too big for me to climb! There are countless other examples in my life where God’s Word has shone light into my darkness of sadness, sin, worry, insecurity, fear, anxiety, confusion, or shame. The importance of Scripture in our daily, moment-by-moment journey of faith simply cannot be exaggerated…this is why I want a page on my website entirely devoted to MEMORIZING it!
Most likely you have come to this website because you care about your spiritual and physical fitness. Fortunately, the Bible tells us how to prioritize: “Train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come” (1 Timothy 4:7-8). To become godly, our hearts and minds must be cleansed, transformed, and renewed by the only light powerful enough to conquer ANY darkness: the infallible light of God’s Word. And just as physical muscle is trained and strengthened over time, so is spiritual muscle. By “training” our hearts and minds in the strengthening light of Scripture we WILL become more spiritually fit and experience this “promise” for life…abundant and eternal. And as He “turns (our) darkness into light,” we begin to see miracles happen!
Simply click on the pink heart, peruse the verses, and choose one that speaks to you TODAY. Read it over and over, dwelling on its words and meaning for you, and then close your eyes as you “read” it again. Do this as many times as you need until you know the Scripture by heart…the experience will be unique for each person. Perhaps you’ll want to write the verses in your own journal…(in my blog post entitled “The Devil Still Prowls…Be Ready!” I encourage our keeping a “Strength Journal”—this is the perfect time to start!). Once you have memorized a verse (we’re on the honor system here), simply click on the “Memorized” number. No names will appear—this is not about personal glory—but as numbers increase, the light of encouragement may shine on others to memorize God’s Word as well.
As you move on to new selections, be sure to continually recite the verses you already hide in your heart. When we go to the gym, we don’t just do one bicep curl and leave. We do repetitions and sets of repetitions of a variety of exercises day after day…for weeks, months, and years. And why do we give our time and effort to these repetitions, in both our physical and spiritual fitness? Because the REWARD is so great. The more time we bask in the light of Love’s Lamp, the closer we become to the Source of the power…there is no greater reward!
“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen” (Ephesians 3:20-21).
