The Mission of Lavishing Love

“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!…Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one other, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us” (1 John 3:1, 4:11-12). WOW.

Never did I want to be on Facebook. I currently have no clue how to “Tweet.” It has scared me to tears several times recently that via this blog the world will have access to my innermost thoughts, feelings, and relationship with God. I am simply a writer who feels content living in my own little world, expressing my faith in my own controlled ways.

But amid my fears, weaknesses, and failings, I believe Jesus has taken hold of my hand and is leading me down a new path because God is calling me to do more.

You see, through some pretty intense trials and tribulations in my life, God has lavished His love on me. Through the death of my fifth child, God carried me in the palm of His hand. Literally…I floated through life for months. The strength He provided in my weakness was supernatural. The peace He provided me transcends human understanding. The hope He gave me in my darkness was a gift, which we opened together very slowly over time. He never left me; rather in all these ways, He lavished His love on me.

My baby’s dying wasn’t my fault, but other trials in my life have been. Through my willful sins, my heavenly Father has had every right to turn His back on me, yet He’s been faithful and forgiving. He’s shown me compassion, He’s restored my broken heart, mind, and body, and He’s renewed me for His purposes. Yes, I’ve suffered harsh consequences for my sins, but God’s never left me; instead, through His unfathomable mercies, He’s lavished His love on me, time and time again.

Without even knowing who you are, I believe God has lavished His love on you too. Maybe you recognize and appreciate it or maybe you don’t, but because I know my heavenly Father and that He IS love, I believe He LOVES to lavish His love on each and every one of us. We are His precious children.

Getting back to this blog, I guess I feel like a bit of a guinea pig! I think God wants to use me and my feeble attempts in this new world of social media to declare the love He lavishes on us AND to express the love we, in turn, might lavish on others. “Since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” Imagine if every one of us, with the love God has lavished on us, lavished another with His love?! God’s love and light and life would sweep through neighborhoods and schools and corporations and continents, transforming this world one child of God at a time.

Continuing the blessing, “If we love one other, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.” God knows how fragile my heart, mind, and body can be…how in some way every day I am reminded of my lack of wholeness. To think that by simply loving another, GOD’S LOVE would be made COMPLETE within my brokenness is mind-boggling—I’d say “too good to be true,” but Scripture doesn’t lie. That’s why earlier I said, “WOW.”

I invite you to come on this journey with me…to brave this new territory together, holding the hand of the One God sent to teach us how to love best, His Son Jesus. In doing so, I believe we will fulfill God’s purpose and His pleasure. What could be better?!
